Because We Care Fund
No one should have to choose between buying food for their family or paying for cancer medications; or skipping treatment because they don’t have access to transportation. Begun in 2008, the Because We Care fund directly supports our families and neighbors battling this disease:
- 50,400+ new NC cancer patients in 2015
- Approximately 450 of these are in Cleveland County
- 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime.
- To date, the Because We Care fund has assisted over 350 Cleveland County cancer patients
- The Foundation has given over $240,000 to local cancer patients in financial need through this fund
With your help, we can continue to provide this much needed aid to those who need it the most. Every dollar raised for this fund remains in Cleveland County to benefit our citizens and their families.

Accidents are the leading cause of injury and death in children. The mission of Safe Kids Cleveland County is to “reduce these accidental injuries through a combination of advocacy, engineering and enforcement.”
Safe Kids Cleveland County is a part of Safe Kids North Carolina and is one of more than 600 coalitions affiliated with Safe Kids Worldwide. The mission of these organizations is to prevent accidental childhood injury.
The coalition is comprised of local government, health and safety agencies, educators, businesses and individuals dedicated to this mission and began as an effort to reduce childhood injuries and deaths that were occurring in our county. Dr. Mike Barringer, Trauma Surgeon and founding leader of Safe Kids Cleveland County, stated, “I want to work myself out of a job. I don’t want to tell parents anymore that they have lost a child to a preventable injury”.
The HealthCare Foundation of Cleveland County is the supporting organization for Safe Kids Cleveland County. The program is funded through grants and donations. Coalition members are comprised of representatives from various agencies and individuals that are passionate about reducing childhood injuries.
