Our History

Learn how we serve as a catalyst to promote wellness and improve healthy outcomes in Cleveland County.

Founded in 1990, the Cleveland Memorial Hospital Foundation, Inc. was established to raise funds in support of capital projects and equipment for Cleveland Memorial Hospital.  Most notably, the Foundation raised $1.5 million to assist in the $35 million expansion project of the hospital.  In 1995, the Board of Directors changed the mission from funding bricks and mortar to providing financial support for community disease and injury prevention activities and health maintenance programs.  During the succeeding years, the Foundation undertook a number of projects within both the Cleveland and Kings Mountain hospitals, including:

As Cleveland Memorial Hospital Foundation (1990 to 2014):

  • Wellness Center for Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehabilitation – Atrium Health Cleveland
  • Labyrinth & Garden of Peace at Atrium Health Cleveland
  • Cleveland Pines Solarium
  • Courtesy Tram for visitors at Atrium Health Cleveland

Following the county’s sale of the two hospitals to Atrium Health, the Foundation’s board of directors voted in 2014 to change the name of the organization and expand its mission to address healthcare issues and initiatives throughout Cleveland County. As a stand-alone non-profit community foundation with an independent board of directors.  As a non-endowed foundation, having not received any funds from the county's $100+ million sale proceeds for the two hospitals, we must raise money to support our mission. Every dollar raised stays in Cleveland County to address health and wellness issues affecting our citizens.

Atrium Health fully endorses the efforts of the organization and recognizes the need for a community non-profit healthcare foundation.  Through in-kind support and active partnership, Atrium Health provides professional staff, office space and administrative overheard support to the Foundation allowing us to devote our entire focus and limited assets on the healthcare needs of the community, including the following:
